Pastoral History

The first pastor of Trough Hill Primitive Baptist Church was Thornton Hill, brother-in-law to Easter Nelson. Under Elder Hill, Trough Hill was started with no more than six members. He served from 1883 to 1909.

During the pastor ship of Elder Louis Brown, the second pastor, who served from 1909-1932, most of the village families attended church and would bring their children. Service was held once a month, on 3rd Thursday. Trough Hill became a member of the Second National Ketocton Primitive Baptist Association, and on August 22-25, 1912, the assemblage of the 2nd National Ketoctan Primitive Baptist Association was held at Trough Hill under the leadership of Elder Louis Brown.

Elder William Gibbs, the third pastor, served from 1932 to 1945. Services and meetings were held on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Sundays and 3rd Saturdays of each month. Membership ranged from 11-15 during these years.

Elder George L. Bailey, the fourth pastor, served from 1950 until his death in 1983. During his pastor ship, in 1962, the church was renovated.

In 1983, a young pastor named Lindsey O. Green, from the adjoining village of Hume, Virginia and a great grandson of Easter Nelson, was called on to hold services two Sundays a month. Although, at the time he was serving as pastor of Guildfield Baptist Church in Millwood, VA, Pastor or Rev. Green gladly volunteered his services to Trough Hill. He served with distinction until he retired.

Pastor Percy Studvent acted as the interim pastor of Trough Hill Baptist Church (THBC) beginning January 2019. On November 8, 2019 Pastor Studvent was officially ordained as the new Pastor of THBC*. Pastor Percy Studvent was born July 5, 1959. At the age of 19, he accepted the Lord as his personal savior. In October 1992, Pastor Studvent was ordained by the First Calvary Baptist Church in Dawn, VA. He has served as an Associate Minister at Second Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dawn, VA, Associate Minister at Macadeonia Community Baptist Church in Milford, VA and as Associate Minister at Assembly of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church in Richmond, VA.
